TERRA BUBO ("Land Spilled")

  • The Space Upstairs 214 North Lexington Street Pittsburgh, PA, 15208 United States (map)

Terra Bubo, September 22 and 23rd, 2023 at The Space Upstairs (214 N Lexington St, Pittsburgh, PA). 70 min runtime. Tickets: $15 advance, $20 at door. Made and performed by Renée Copeland and PJ Roduta. Terra (“earth” in Sicilian) Bubo (“spilled” in Tagalog) is a conjuring, remembrance, deep-dive, and non-linear journey that co-mingles the performers’ ancestral folk percussion practices and the islands that birthed them: Sicily, Ireland and the Philippines. Though the entire composition is a contemporary creation, there are ancient rhythms, songs, and instruments embedded throughout the performance. With these sonic reclamations, movement, film, as well as live-feed projection by Mike Cooper further the narrative of interconnected vibrations and their effects. The evening concludes with water percussion–a hydrophone within a filled bowl of water amplifies the performers’ personal items and hands which play themselves into a new invocation. Terra Bubo was made possible by a grant from the American Composers Forum with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation.
